Garment Care

Sethu garments are made using the same techniques that have been practiced for hundreds, if not thousands, of years — long before the advent of modern laundry machines and chemical detergents. As such, these garments are more precious than their modern counterparts, and require a little more care.

To maintain these garments in the same condition as you bought them, we recommend hand washing them individually (or with like colors) with a pH-neutral detergent in cold water, and hang drying in the shade. Machine washing with like colors and dry cleaning are also acceptable.

That being said, part of the beauty of garments that have been naturally dyed is that they do change over time.
Exposure to prolonged sunlight can fade colors, and rubbing or wringing garments dry can create streaks. In our opinion, these are not concerns, but rather advantages that make these garments even more beautiful and personalized.

Additionally, due to the handwoven nature of many of the garments, they may be more prone to seam slippage — where the yarns of a fabric are pulled apart at the seam line under repeated tension — with use over time. If this occurs, we strongly encourage taking the garment to your local tailor for mending. Every stitch, patch, and streak adds another chapter to the garment’s rich story.
